Situated inside the Zhongshan Gate of Nanjing, Nanjing Museum covers an area of 12.9 hectare. Originally established in 1933, over 2,000 first-class treasures at national level are displaying in the museum. The two main buildings of the museum were built in a style of a blend of east and west. If you are interested in the long history and the rich culture of China, this museum is a must-see when you visit Nanjing. It is a veritable feast of historical and cultural relics, paintings, calligraphies, and ancient books from home and abroad. Among them the porcelains made 2200 years and 3200 years ago are the most representative ones.

The Basic Hall was built in the style of ancient palace 1000 years ago to house the historical items. The Basic Hall consists of three special exhibition sections as followed:

1. The Five Thousand-year Civilization Panorama of the Lower Reaches of Yangtze River;
2. The Very Fine Display of Chinese History, People and Culture;
3. Jiangsu Archaeological Achievements Exhibition.

The Art Exhibition Hall situates to the west of the Basic Hall. A remarkable collection of some 30,000 calligraphy and painting masterpieces are particularly to be admired. Other treasures which were made from 11th century BC to 476 BC are displayed, such as ancient painted pottery wares, bronze wares; besides the treasures made after AD are also on display, such as the jade suit sewn with silver thread and the gold beast of the Warring States Period. Visitors will feel breathtaking when standing in front of such artistic beauty and richness. It consists of 11 sections as followed:

2. Jade Articles Hall;
3. Paintings Hall;
4. Embroideries Hall;
5. Pottery Wares Hall;
6. Porcelain Wares Hall;
7. Lacquer Wares Hall;
8. Folklores Hall;
9. Modern Arts Hall;
10. Calligraphy and Painting Hall;
11. Treasure Hall

The museum is also a venue for a rich variety of activities, such as special subject lectures. The special subject lectures of Nanjing Museum have attracted over 12,000,000 speakers and listeners from home and from abroad. Except the displays at home, it has arranged displays in countries such as Japan and Germany. The exhibitions in other countries have made a great contribution to the international understanding and co-operation in the field of art and culture. Besides, research in the fields of culture, folk customs, and traditions is encouraged in the museum. The Nanjing Museum is the only museum to investigate folk custom.
