Harbin Tour

Harbin locationHarbin is the capital of the Heilongiang Province and is located on the eastern Songnen Plain. The beautiful Songhua River runs through the city. It is not only Heilongjiang's political, economic, scientific, educational, and cultural center, but also serves as the provincial transportation hub. It contains nine districts and ten counties, including county-level cities, and covers a total area of 4,254 square kilometers. Harbin has a population of 3.7 million. Harbin's history and geographic location gives the city an exotic atmosphere, which not only gathers together the history and culture of the north minority nationalities, but also blends them with Chinese and western cultures. It has thus been named the "River City", "Ice City", "the Pearl on the Neck of a Swan". Harbin is also known as the City of Lilacs, because the lilac is the flower of the city.

Harbin has a long history. People started living here ten thousand years ago. It has been inhabited by the Fuyu, Nuzhen (an ancient nationality in China) and Manchus. The Nuzhen created a state and made Acheng District its capital in 1115 A. D. It gets its name Harbin from the Nuzhen-Manchu word "Alejin", which means honor. Harbin underwent rapid modernization when Czarist Russia built a railway through northeastern China to connect Port Arthur, located near Dalian in Liaoning Province, with Siberia. In the early 20th century, some 160,000 foreign nationals from more than 30 countries lived here. Harbin's economy prospered and its cultural life flourished during this period, and the city became known as northeast Asia's main commercial center and most cosmopolitan city. After the September 18th Incident, Harbin, like the rest of northeast China, came under Japanese imperialist rule. One year after the Second World War ended, Harbin became the first big city to be liberated by the Communist Party and established a democratic government.

Harbin is located on the Songnen Plain, which runs west and southwest from the city; the mountainous Lesser Khingan region is off to the north and northeast, while Changbai and Zhangguangcai Mountains are in the east and southeast of the city. The beautiful Songhua River runs through the center Harbin, providing its city dwellers with pleasing views and ample recreational opportunities. Harbin has non-stop rail, passenger airline, and ferry service to Russia, making it an important hub for the first Eurasian Land Bridge and the air corridor. Harbin has become a versatile industrial city, known for its machine tool, medical and electrical equipment, bearing, light alloy casting, aircraft, textile, and pharmaceutical industries. Large numbers of business people from China and abroad come to Harbin for its annual economic and business conventions and fairs. Indeed, Harbin functions as both a key manufacturing and distribution center inChina's rapidly expanding economy.

Harbin is also a tourist city with enchanting scenery. It is widely known not only for the beautiful Songhua River, but for the magnificent Sun Island as well. It is also renowned for its architecture. This architecture includes contemporary Chinese-Western and Japanese-style buildings, as well as many well-maintained older European structures. The latter include a number of notable Russian-style Byzantine-like buildings. With the scenic Songhua River running through the city and its pleasant summer climate, Harbin has become an enjoyable summer resort destination. However, the city is mainly known for its winter recreation; in fact, Harbin is colder than most cities in the world located at the same latitude. These long and frigid winters mean that tourists can indulge in winter sports and enable the city to put on its world famous ice festival. Harbin's main tourist areas include the Manchurian Tiger Park, Sun Island, Harbin Forest and Animal Parks, North Pole Aquarium, St. Sophia Church, Confucian Temple, Harbin Yabuli Skiing Field, and Yuquan Hunting Ground.
